Endocrine Surgery
Surgical expertise in diseases of the thyroid, parathyroid, adrenal glands, and pancreas

Dr. Scott is an endocrine surgeon. Endocrine surgeons are specially trained to manage diseases of and perform surgery on endocrine organs, like the thyroid, parathyroid and adrenal glands, as well as the pancreas. After general surgery training, Dr. Scott completed a fellowship studying thyroid cancer, hyperparathyroidism, and adrenal tumors and got expertise in safely performing thyroid surgery, parathyroid surgery, and adrenalectomy. He knows the most current therapy for thyroid cancer, and can help patients with the complex decision about the extent of surgery they need for treatment, or whether they need surgery at all. Thyroid cancer care is tailored to each patient and their unique set of circumstances and priorities.
Endocrine surgeons have special expertise in:
- the management and work-up of thyroid nodules and goiters, including ultrasound and fine needle aspiration (FNA) to help diagnose them
- surgical options for hyperthyroidism
- the management of thyroid cancer
- diagnosing and treating high calcium cased by hyperparathyroidism (parathyroid adenomas)
- managing complex parathyroid disease, including hyperparathyroidism cased by kidney failure (tertiary hyperparathyroidism), genetic syndromes like multiple endocrine neoplasia (MEN), and parathyroid cancer
- adrenal tumors/nodules, hormone imbalances caused by functional adrenal nodules (pheochromocytoma, hyperaldosteronism, and hypercortisolism), as well as adrenal cancer

Hyperparathyroidism is another part of endocrine surgery where we can offer patients the kind of sophisticated work-up and surgical plan that used to only be available at big-city hospitals
Dr. Scott works closely with primary care doctors and endocrinologists to help cure patients of the sometimes debilitating symptoms of high calcium that are caused by overactive parathyroid glands (hyperparathyroidism). Mental fog, depression, fatigue, kidney stones, bone pain, osteoporosis are all among the symptoms that can resolve with the correct treatment of hyperparathyroidism. But hyperparathyroidism is shockingly undertreated – all patients who have a high calcium should have hyperparathyroidism ruled out as a cause.
